Tn this paper I examine the form of Italicus’ translation in Mas Latina (892 - 905) in comparison with the original Homeric text, in particular with the episode of the conflict between Achilles and Aeneas and the future rule of Aeneas which Poseidon predicts. On this passage the following remarks can be made: 1) it reproduces the original content, although widely romanized through Vergilian and Ovidian intertexts 2) it preserves some of the poetical diction and dramatic effect of the original, although Roman allusions are introduced. 3) By contrasting Achilles as Thetideius her os and Aeneas as Cylhereius her os Italicus overemphasizes Aeneas’ role as the Roman ancestor of the Julo- Claudian dynasty by undermining Achilles. 4) Italicus saw in translation a poetic device that he could refunctionalize to an entirely new purpose, the establishment of his poetic personality on the ]->asis of romanization. By using the acrostich scripsit and the personal indexical nobis (902) Italicus emphasizes his authorial voice in special reference to the contemporary political and social context {nobis indicates the-relation of the speaker - narrator of this text to its addressees, i.e. the public of the Neronian era). By examining Italicus’ romanization technique in this individual passage much more insight can be gained from the patterns it forms and how these function in the economy of the epitome and in the new Roman context.
