Agricultural subsidies have been a significant help to the economy and more specifically to the primary sector. A large percentage of Greece’s labor force is employed in agriculture and so the subsidies have been a major aid for agriculture and the Greek producers. Through this research, we examine that if this aid has been distributed equally among Greek producers by using three different measures. All inequality measures that we employed, which are the Gini and Atkinson index and the 80:20 ratio, are leading us to the same conclusion that there is inequality in the distribution of agricultural subsidies. This result raises the question for which are the factors that contribute to total inequality. To do that, firstly,we estimated our models using OLS as we employed the decomposition methodology of Fields (2003). To find the factors that contribute to this inequality we use a regression-based decomposition method as we mentioned which shows us that the area a producer possess and the number of subsidies a producer has received explains an important percentage of total inequality in Greece and in Epirus. On the other hand, the age of producer and regional dummies, which shows the location of the producer, seems to have only a small contribution to total inequality and in some cases, it seems that are helping to the reduction of inequality.
