MANY PATIENTS WITH AN ATTACK OF IDIOPATHIC OPTIC NEURITIS (ION) WILL EVENTUALLY DEVELOP MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) (88%-13%). IN THIS STUDY, BY DEFINING LOWER NORMAL LIMITS OF OCULOGRAPHIC PARAMETERS OF VISUALLY GUIDED SACCADES ANDSMOOTH PURSUIT EYE MOVEMENTS (SPEM) WE WERE ABLE TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE STATISTICALLY DEFINED ABNORMALITIES AS PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS. PARAMETERS OF SACCADES WERE STUDIED IN 22 PATIENTS WITH ION AND PARAMETERS OF SPEM WERE STUDIED IN 17 PATIENTS OF THE SAME GROUP PARAMETERS OF BOTH TYPES OF EYE MOVEMENTS WERE STUDIED IN 21 CONTROL SUBJECTS. FOLLOW-UP OF THE PATIENTSWAS OVER 2,2 YEARS ON AVERANGE. OCULOGRAPHY WAS PERFORMED WITH THE INFRAREDREFLECTION TECHNIQUE. SUBCLINICAL ADDUCTION SLOWING WAS OBSERVED IN 9 PATIENTS. SEVEN OF THESE AND 4 OUT OF 5 PATIENTS WITH PROLONGED SACCADIC LATENCYDEVELOPED CLINICALLY DEFINITE MS. SUBCLINICAL ABNORMALITIES OF SPEM DETECTED IN 6 PATIENTS WERE PROVED WITHOUT PATHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE. IN CONCLUSION, SUBCLINICAL ADDUCTION SLOWING (SUBCLINICAL INTERNUCLEAR OPHTHALMOPLEGIA).IN PATIENTS WITH ION REPRESENTS AN OCULOGRAPHIC FINDING THAT PREDICTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLINICALLY DEFINITE MS.
