The hydrogen ion concentration [H3O+] of any weak monoprotic acid solution can be determined by solving the exact equilibrium expression for the acid dissociation, using appropriate numerical methods. However, accurate values of [H3O+] can be calculated from convenient simplified forms of the exact expression optioned by means of a diagram of PCHA versus pK(a). The diagram drawn under predetermined conditions is separated in four distinct parts. Without exception all solutions corresponding to a particular part definitely obey an individual form in calculating their hydrogen ion concentration. (EN)
