Six herbicide residues were detected in water samples from draining streams and pumping stations of the agricultural area of Thessaloniki during one year period, from March 1988 to February 1989. Higest concentrations were detected during the planting and growing season from May until September. The released amounts of each herbicide were calculated using one collective model dependent on herbicide concentrations, water flow rates and on their changes with time. They are being released from the agricultural fields and transfered to Thermaikos Gulf, through river Axios, Loudias, Aliakmon, draining streams and draining pumping stations on the coast. The percentage of released amounts of commonly used herbicides was calculated as 7.5 % of EPTC, 9.7 % of Molinate, 0.3 % of Simazine, 2.2 % of Diuron, 6.4 % of Propanil and 4.7 % of Metolachlor and these are carried by surface waters to the Gulf, mainly through the Loudias river.
