The sampling and analysis of carbonyls formed during the photooxidation of selected monoterpenes (alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, limonene) in air is investigated. A method using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine coated C-18 cartridges which allows the specific analysis of aldehydes and ketones as their hydrazones down to sub ppb-level is applied. A wide range of products was analysed including 6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]heptan-2-one, 3-(1-methylethenyl)-6-oxo-heptanal and pinonaldehyde which are the main atmospheric oxidation products of beta-pinene, limonene and alpha-pinene, respectively.
