In March, 1948, a sculptured stele was removed from a small church at the island of Telos, where it was used as a lintel. The stele, bearing the inscription with the name of the dead [Ά]γαθόκλεα [Ά]πολ- λωνίου (as well as a second, longer, inscription engraved for a later re-use) is peculiar for its representation, consisting of two female figures embracing each other. The origin of this motif, confined almost to Rhodos, can be traced back to the stele of Krito and Timarista (bibliography see: Άρχ. Έφ. 1958, 208 note 1; see also pp. 210-216 for a discussion of this motif). The relief, dated to the early roman period, is characterized by a slight archaism in the treatment of some details, but its descendance from an earlier, obviously hellenistic, original can be fairly well assumed.
