Research partnerships to promote wildlife health

Loukopoulos, Panagiotis

The aim of this communication was to present and raise awareness of some of the partnerships concerning the study of wildlife health and involving Aristotle University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine units, and to outline the outcomes and potential benefits of such initiatives for the research partners and for the promotion of wildlife health. Partnerships may be short-term and focus on the diagnostic investigation and management of a single case (eg marine mammal or turtle strandings), or continuing, usually involving cooperation in case management or the long-term study of the pathology of a particular species (such as the Cypriot mouflon and the Asiatic bear). Partners may provide veterinary or other expertise on a particular species, condition or research technique, or access to field data, cases, tracking and monitoring networks. Collaborating partners include NGOs, universities and state departments in Greece and overseas and have included, among others, the Society for the Protection of the Mediterranean Seal (Monachus monachus)(MoM), Arcturos, the Thessaloniki Municipal Zoo, the Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute, Animals Asia Foundation, the Cyprus Game Fund, and the Cyprus State Veterinary Services.
