ΙΝ PATMOS IN THE 16th CENTURY Diakos, Son of Kritikis, Ship-owner and BusinessmanIt is well-established that the island of Patmos was prosperous and thriving by the end of the 16th century. This article examines the case of a successful ship-owner and entrepreneur from Patmos, who can be considered as a representative of this period: with his business connected to the sea, his relations with the Ottoman authorities, his wealth and his attachment to the Greek-Orthodox faith. Although he became somehow an almost legendary figure, his will, preserved in the archive of the Monastery of Patmos, reveals his approach to thought and action.ELISABETH A. ZACHARIADOU
