The article introduces a comparative approach that aims to focus on the similarities and differences between the Balkan and Mediterranean examples on the one hand, and the American merchant houses on the other, in the 18th and early 19th centuries, by studying their historiographical interpretations. The study of Greek merchant houses is used as a starting point. Merchants formed a large part of the economically active individuals and groups in the Balkans, the Mediterranean and America in the 18th and 19th centuries. They offer a common ground of analysis for the advent of capitalism and corporate organization both for economic history and business history. Although they have often been viewed from different historiographical perspectives – as national promulgators, as agents of merchant capitalism and as predecessors to big business – their rich archives may offer evidence for cultural investigations and biographical studies in global trajectories.
