SCHOLARS AND CHRONICLERS The paper presents the Nafplitian scholars during the first and second Venetian occupation, who resided in Nafplio, in the Eastern Mediterranean or in the various places of the Greek Diaspora, and examines their work within the cultural context in which it had been conducted, including the experiential and nostalgic references to their place of origin or their birthplace, for the fate of which they suffer, toil and hope for a better future. Considering Venice as the main centre, in the frame of a broader consideration of the creative and cultural endeavors of the Greeks of Diaspora and their publishing endeavors for books which the Genus needed, Nafplitian refugees contributed effectively to satisfying the demands of their time due to their intellectual development, their talents as well as their action regarding the accumulation of manuscript copies, mainly by the intellectual circles of Europe, and the preparation of manuscripts by which would be printed liturgical and theological books by Greek and Italian printers for the needs of the Eastern Mediterranean. As intellectual workers of the Venetian and Turkish occupied space, they cultivate the traditional deep-rooted Greek-Latin culture, so that to coincide with the demands of the European culture and the needs of the so called ethnic survival as well as the acculturation of the Genus: production of manuscript copies for the European libraries, answer to questions as well as to the needs of a broader information to the foreign officers, travelers and scholars. In addition, the elaboration of documentation for the study of various issues regarding the Greek space, and the writing of books on themes of secular and religious culture, literacy and the orthodox cult. The reports of chroniclers (either with origins from Nafplio or not) on the historical course of Nafplio are examined with regard to the amount of information that is provided, and especially to the ideological codification of meanings that are reflected, following each time the worldview of the dominant and more rarely expressing the desires and wills of the conquered, who definitely loath the perpetuation of the conquest.
