Η παρούσα πτυχιακή εργασία πραγματεύεται την καλλιέργεια της Jatropha curcas που υπόσχεται να γίνει μια ενεργειακή καλλιέργεια όχι μόνο για να μειώσει την εξάρτηση από τα ορυκτά καύσιμα αλλά και για να προσφέρει ανάπτυξη σε αγροτικές κοινωνίες ιδίως στις αναπτυσσόμενες χώρες καθώς και για να προσφέρει ένα δίκτυο ενεργειακής ασφάλειας. Η Ινδία, η Κίνα, η Ταϋλάνδη και η Ινδονησία συγκαταλέγονται στα υποψήφια μέρη με σχέδια εντατικοποίησης της καλλιέργειας τα επόμενα χρόνια. Περίπου, 1.01 εκατομμύρια εκτάρια προορίζονται για εμπορική χρήση κυρίως για biodiesel.
Fossil fuels have been the main energy source for covering the needs. Nevertheless, the rising demand and the overexploitation have caused climate and oil crises. Therefore, Jatropha curcas is promoted as solution for clean energy for promising energy crop. It is compromised as an alternative but this does not constitute a simple path; however, the energy balance has to be positive as referred to needed inputs and prospective outputs. However, a lot of claims have been stated without scientific proof and in effort to convert claims about Jatropha into facts, and ascertain the crop viability literature research is the tool in the present Bachelor thesis. After analysis on economic, environmental and societal approach the question if it is worthwhile for future cultivation gave a result. Small scale cultivation is better and it becomes more profitable if for the time being as it is required further investigation. Finally, Jatropha cultivation would be suggested in remote areas which are highly dependent on energy imports as supplement income, as it still behaves as a wild species.
