Mytilene is the capital city of one of the biggest islands in Greece located in the Northeastern Aegean Sea. To evaluate the environmental quality of its coastal area, samples of bottom sediments and sea water were collected in December 2007 (Interreg III Program) from 25 sea stations from the northern to the southern part of the coastal area of Mytilene and its suburbs. These measurements were used in this study. The main objective of the study was to determine the underlying factors which affect mostly the coastal environment. Multivariate statistics (Cluster Analysis and Factor Analysis/ Principal Component Analysis) were applied to classify the stations and to identify stations influenced by human activities. Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis classified the stations into two groups in each case (sediment and sea water) : the first group predominantly derived less affected by human activities, the second being influenced by them. Furthermore, based on previous studies a eutrophication index was applicated to discern oligotrophic from mesotrophic water situation in the area. Finally, taking into account the outcome of this first analysis suggestions were made for future work and study.
