Authors and illustrators influenced by the changes in the contemporary society choose to use post-modern and radical characteristics in illustrated children’s books as a result of the changes of our era. Varied forms of modern world representations, affected by the post-modern experimentation with regard to the strong appearance of the metafictional devices in their narrative elements, are evident in these books. Based on this observation, this assignment examines the way that metafictional devices are presented in the narrative elements of six picture-books written by the author and illustrator Emily Gravett, whose oeuvre constitutes a significant specimen of the contemporary illustrated children’s books. Simultaneously, the role of the reader, who is asked to turn from a passive to an active state and is called to participate actively in the process of generating the gist, is also studied in this paper. The results indicated that the presence of these devices establishes the books containing them as a new genre of illustrated books which can be almost considered as art. As a result, these picture books deviate from the category of the conventional children’s literature and reflect a sample of modernity in the contemporary children’s literature. Now the reader is neither a passive recipient nor just a simple viewer of the story, instead they are invited to decipher all the featured codes (visual and verbal modality) and devices, and make the necessary intertextual links in order to find the meaning and generate the gist of the story. In this way, the narrative experience of the reader is enriched and a new perception of literature is presented.
Συγγραφείς και εικονογράφοι επηρεαζόμενοι από τις αλλαγές στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία επιλέγουν να χρησιμοποιούν στα εικονογραφημένα βιβλία για παιδιά μεταμοντέρνα και ριζοσπαστικά χαρακτηριστικά, ως απόρροια της αλλαγής των καιρών. Σε αυτά εντοπίζεται μια ποικιλία μορφών αναπαράστασης του σημερινού κόσμου, που επηρεάζεται από το μεταμοντέρνο πειραματισμό, αναφορικά με την έντονη εμφάνιση μεταμυθοπλαστικών τεχνικών στα αφηγηματικά τους στοιχεία. Με βάση αυτό τον προβληματισμό, στην εργασία αυτή, εξετάζεται ο τρόπος που παρουσιάζονται οι μεταμυθοπλαστικές τεχνικές στα αφηγηματικά στοιχεία έξι εικονοβιβλίων της συγγραφέως και εικονογράφου Emily Gravett, όπου το έργο της αποτελεί αξιόλογο δείγμα των σύγχρονων εικονογραφημένων βιβλίων για παιδιά. Παράλληλα, διερευνάται ο ρόλος του/της αναγνώστη/τριας, που καλείται να βγει από την παθητικότητά του και να συμμετάσχει ενεργά στη διαδικασία παραγωγής νοήματος. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν, ότι η παρουσία των τεχνικών αυτών τα καθιστά ένα νέο είδος εικονογραφημένων βιβλίων που αγγίζουν τα όρια της τέχνης, με αποτέλεσμα να αποκλίνουν από τα συμβατικά όρια της παιδικής λογοτεχνίας και να αντανακλούν το δείγμα της νεωτερικότητας στη σύγχρονη λογοτεχνία για παιδιά. Πλέον ο/η αναγνώστης/τρια δεν είναι ένας/μια παθητικός/η δέκτης ούτε ένας/μια απλός/ή θεατής του αφηγήματος που διαβάζει, αλλά καλείται να αποκωδικοποιήσει όλους τους κώδικες (οπτική και λεκτική τροπικότητα), τις τεχνικές που προβάλλονται και να προβεί στις απαραίτητες διακειμενικές συνδέσεις προκειμένου να νοηματοδοτήσει την ιστορία. Με τον τρόπο αυτό εμπλουτίζει την αφηγηματική του εμπειρία και προβάλλεται μια νέα αντίληψη της λογοτεχνίας.
