THE COMMERCIAL ARCHIVE OF THE MANNOS FAMILY (1780-1850)The present article attempts to trace the trade activity of Balkan merchants in Middle Europe and especially of Mannos' trade company. My research is based on the microfilms of the archive of the Mannos' family which belongs to Budapest City Archives (Budapest Fövaros Lebéltár frace). There is a mine of information in these documents that contributes to illustrate the course of the company, to investigate its role in the economic, political, social and intellectual life of Budapest and finally to understand the trade network, the role of the members of the family in the commercial organisation of the firm and also their connections with the largest market centres in Middle Europe and the Ottoman Empire. An investigation of the archival material may show the process of the assimilation of the family and of its adaptation to Hungarian circumstances. It would be interesting to investigate the language as a mechanism of assimilation or a factor of national identity construction. The corpus consists of business letters, commercial and personal correspondence, testaments, deeds of purchase, accounts, bank loans, bills of exchange, inventories, bank notes, stocks, registers, commercial and account books, bonds, charters of companies, albums and illustrated books, photos of statues, school books and reports, juridical decisions, lists of persons who contributed to the building of churches, titles of nobility etc.
