MIGRATION AND TRANSFER OF TECHNIQUES IN CENTRAL EUROPE (MID 18th-EARLY 19th CENTURIES) THE  COMPANY  OF AMBELAKIA (1805)Main subject of this study is the attempt, from the mid eighteenth century, of some Greeks from Thessaly to introduce the cotton yarn red-dying art in Habsburg Lands and to establish special workshops in Vienna, Temeswar, Transylvania, Hungary, Moravia, Saxony, Trieste, etc. They deposited the first known written «arcanum» (instruction) of the method, they pursued and enjoyed exclusive privileges («privilegium privativum») from the imperial authorities and they tried to expand their workshop network by co-founding companies with rich merchants, Greeks or others. State authorities encouraged the establishing of these workshops, subsidizing them with monetary prizes or other suitable accomodations. They also encouraged the cultivation of cotton and madder (the raw material for the dying process), in order to reduce their dependence from imports from the Ottoman territories.
