Στο συγκεκριμένο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται η αριθμητική πρόγνωση του καιρού σε συνδυασμό με τις φυσικές και δυναμικές διεργασίες της ατμόσφαιρας, που αναλύονται σε μία προσομοίωση. Επίσης, παρουσιάζεται το σύστημα των εξισώσεων που χρησιμοποιούν τα αριθμητικά μοντέλα για την περιγραφή της ατμοσφαιρικής κατάστασης. Τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά ενός μοντέλου, όπως το πεδίο ολοκλήρωσης, η οριζόντια και κατακόρυφη διακριτοποίησή του, οι αρχικές και οριακές συνθήκες, αναλύονται με παραδείγματα και διαγράμματα.

In this chapter, the numerical weather prediction is presented in combination with the physical and dynamical processes of the atmosphere resolved in a model simulation. The governed set of equations used by the numerical models to describe the atmospheric state and processes are thoroughly presented here. The basic features of a model, such as the domain of the integration, its horizontal and vertical discretization, the initial and boundary conditions, are discussed with various examples and diagrams.
