Πρώτα από όλα προσδιορίζεται η έννοια της θεωρίας και γίνεται διάκριση μεταξύ θετικής και κανονιστικής θεωρίας. Κατόπιν, προσδιορίζεται το περιεχόμενο της πολιτικής θεωρίας/φιλοσοφίας και διακρίνονται οι τρεις γενικές εκδοχές της. Ακολουθεί το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του κεφαλαίου, στο οποίο παρέχεται διαδοχικά μια επισκόπηση της αρχαίας ελληνικής και ρωμαϊκής πολιτικής θεωρίας, της μεσαιωνικής, της νεότερης και της σύγχρονης. Αναδεικνύονται, έτσι, βασικές ιδέες, μοτίβα, ορόσημα, συνέχειες και ασυνέχειες του πολιτικού στοχασμού.

First of all, the concept of theory is defined and a distinction is made between positive and normative theory. Then, the content of political theory and philosophy is defined and the three general versions of political theory/philosophy are distinguished. This is followed by the main part of the chapter, in which an overview of ancient Greek and Roman political theory, medieval, modern and contemporary political theory is provided in succession. In this way, key ideas, patterns, milestones, continuities and discontinuities in political thought are highlighted.
