Ο 20ός αιώνας μαζί με τις πρωτοπορίες στην Τέχνη έφερε και μια σειρά από νέα μουσικά όργανα, κυρίαρχο στοιχείο των οποίων αποτελούσε η χρήση για πρώτη φορά του ηλεκτρισμού. Τα όργανα αυτά χρησιμοποιήθηκαν από πλήθος συνθετών, κυρίως σε συνδυασμό με άλλα όργανα της ορχήστρας, και στην πλειονότητά τους σταδιακά εγκαταλείφθηκαν. Στο παρόν κεφάλαιο εξετάζεται η πρώτη αυτή περίοδος, μέχρι δηλαδή και πριν το ξέσπασμα του Β΄ Π.Π., των νέων μουσικών οργάνων – ηλεκτρομηχανικών αρχικά, ηλεκτρονικών στη συνέχεια.

Along with the pioneering developments in the arts, the 20th century brought a series of new musical instruments, the main innovation of which was the use of electricity for the first time. Employed by several composers, mainly in combination with other orchestral instruments, many of these instruments were gradually abandoned. This chapter examines this first period of new musical instruments, up to the outbreak of World War II, - electromechanical at first, and electronic thereafter.
