The article focuses on discourse markers of Turkish origin in Modern Greek, such as de, demek, barem. The data discussed here are drawn from recordings of oral speech and belong to three registers: a) Standard Modern Greek; b) dialectal varieties; and c) urban slang. They display differences in function, syntactic position and occurrence in diverse contextual environments. Furthermore, their socio-linguistic dimensions and the value of such turkisms are discussed in the context of contact linguistics. (EL)
