Σκοπός της εργασίας είναι η διερεύνηση της σχέσης του κοινού του νομού Αιτωλοακαρνανίας με την αρχαιολογία. Η διερεύνηση αυτή βασίστηκε σε βιβλιογραφική επισκόπηση της δημόσιας αρχαιολογίας, χαρτογράφηση του πεδίου στην Ελλάδα και ποσοτική έρευνα σχετικά με τη στάση του κοινού απέναντι στην αρχαιολογία και τους φορείς της. Η έρευνα διενεργήθηκε με ερωτηματολόγιο σε περιοχές του νομού Αιτωλοακαρνανίας. Από την ανάλυση των ευρημάτων της έρευνας προέκυψαν δύο βασικά συμπεράσματα: α. Η θετική στάση του κοινού απέναντι στην αρχαιολογία και η ανάγκη ενίσχυσης δράσεων ενεργής συμμετοχής του στις αρχαιολογικές πρακτικές και επαφής με τις αρχαιότητες με δεδομένη την πληθώρα αρχαιολογικών θέσεων του νομού και παρά την χαμηλή επισκεψιμότητά τους και β. η επιθυμία του κοινού για διατήρηση του αυστηρού πλαισίου προστασίας των αρχαιοτήτων, με ενίσχυση της κρατικής χρηματοδότησης και έλεγχο των δράσεων από εξειδικευμένο προσωπικό. Από την εργασία, και ειδικότερα από την έρευνα, μπορούν να εντοπιστούν τα πεδία και τα μέσα εφαρμογής των πρακτικών της δημόσιας αρχαιολογίας στον νομό. Ο κύριος περιορισμός εκτός από την υποκειμενικότητα των απαντήσεων είναι το μέγεθος του πληθυσμού του δείγματος.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between archaeology and the society of the Aitoloakarnania prefecture. This investigation is combines current literature’s review, scope’s mapping in Greece and quantitative research on the public attitude towards archaeology and on the relevant public regulating body. To this direction, the conducted research was based on questionnaire distributed to specific areas of Aitoloakarnania prefecture. Two major conclusions were derived from the data analysis over the obtained answers: a. the positive public opinion towards archaeology and the need for promoting actions which reinforce the general idea of involvement in archaeological practices. This is expected to promote interactions and real connections with the subject, in a region which includes a plethora of archaeological places with a low number of visitors; and b. the public requirement for the establishment of a more restrict legislature for the protection of antiquities through the increase of the state funding and of the control over actions coming from specialised personnel. Finally, the present work indicates the current fields and means of implementation related to the organisation of the public archaeology in the Aitoloakarnania region. It should be noted that besides the answers’ subjectivity, the size of the sample on which the present analysis was based, can be considered as the main limitation.
