In this paper some new formulations of the T- and the S-criteria of fracture mechanics are obtained using the tools of inequality mechanics. These new formulations permit the derivation of some new variational principles for fractured bodies in inequality form. On the basis of the new formulations and variational expressions derived a comparison of the two fracture criteria is attempted showing the superiority of the T-criterion. Certain generalizations of the two criteria complete the presented theory. © 1991 Springer-Verlag. (EN)
