On the Newton-Lanczos approach for solving nonlinear finite element problems (EN)

This paper investigates the potential of the Lanczos method when applied as a linear equation solver in path-following solution strategies. Three different approaches have been considered and compared. The first is the minimum storage version which solves a new linearized problem in each external nonlinear iteration. The second version keeps the tridiagonal and the orthonormal basis in fast or secondary storage for obtaining initial estimates for the subsequent linearized solutions. The third version operates simultaneously on more than one load increments and proceeds to linearized solutions with more than one right-hand side. The use of preconditioning, truncation and line search acceleration have also been employed and evaluated. © 1992. (EN)
