Constructing elementary databases and using mechanics-related functions and object types in fracture mechanics with mathematica (EN)

The possibility of construction of efficient databases in mechanics is illustrated by using the computer algebra system MATHEMATICA. In the same system, it is also possible to use special types of objects and functions like those encountered in applied mechanics. The area of fracture mechanics and, more explicitly, the case of simple straight cracks was chosen as the vehicle for the illustration of both these approaches in a simple application including an elementary database, special objects of mechanics-related nature, use of these objects in mechanics-related functions and operations on the same objects. Alternative approaches are also suggested in brief. The related elementary MATHEMATICA procedures are displayed as well as some of the obtained results, which were seen to be very satisfactory. It is hoped that the present results will be further extended and extensively used both in fracture mechanics and in other areas of applied mechanics. © 1993. (EN)
