The texture and morphology of zinc electrodeposits prepared under direct current (DC) and pulse current (PC) plating conditions from an acidic sulphate bath on low-carbon steel cathodes were investigated by means of the relative texture coefficients (obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis) and scanning electron microscopy. As verified, the variation of DC deposition current density from very low (0.5 A.dm(-2)) to moderately high values (40 A.dm(-2)), is associated with changes in texture, grain structure and surface morphology of the deposited films, depending on the adopted acidic bath pH (2.0-4.5). PC plating effectively modifies the properties obtained, within a limited range of conditions: however at high current densities PC resembles DC plating. A brief discussion on the nucleation and growth mechanisms involved, is attempted. (EN)
