This paper deals with the methods used to position active noise control sensors and actuators in enclosures. A theoretical examination of the shortcomings appearing in the numerical methods most often used in scientific research is conducted, with respect to their handling of the enclosures' damping properties. A variation of an existing method is introduced, based on the explicit prediction of the sound field, which is capable of simulating realistic acoustic applications. Finally, a number of simulations and optimization runs are performed in order to quantify the inefficiency of the existing methods in modelling complicated and significant damping properties, in comparison to the newly introduced method, and determine the effect of these inefficiencies on the accurate positioning of the ANC actuators and sensors. © S.
