The major types of chemical reactors which can be used for cellulose saccharification by dilute-acid hydrolysis, i.e. CSTR, plug flow, co- and counter-current moving bed, percolator and batch, are examined. The reactors are modelled by reaction engineering methods, and simulated by computer techniques and then compared for their performance, with respect to reaction temperature, time and acid concentration. Optimal conditions for sugar yield and concentration are determined and examined from the point of view of hydrolyzate quality and process sensitivity to small variations of the reaction conditions.
