Depending on their sedimentary origin, limestones contain iron oxide which when is greater than certain limit values diminishes the quality of limestones as raw materials for the cement and lime industries. By this study a process for the removal of Fe2O3 from limestones is proposed. This process is based on the fact that in the beginning of crushing or grinding, iron oxide passes selectively in the fine fraction. So in this paper the influence of grinding time on the removal of iron oxide is studied in more details. Applying the process to 4 different limestones was found that under certain circumstances the removal of Fe2O3 can reach 84%. For each limestone, in relation to its grindability, was found that there is a minimum time of grinding, characteristic for each one, which refers to the maximum removal of Fe2O3 per unit of rejected material. There is also a time limit in which the iron content in the initial sample and the fine fraction is the same. (EN)
