The in-plane isotropic strain due to lattice mismatch of artificial heterostructures and superlattices grown along an arbitrary direction, is derived by minimizing the elastic free energy. The results are expressed in terms of the lattice constants and elastic constants of the two material components. Specific applications are presented, involving standard and non-standard directions of growth in three of the most common superlattices. (EN)
