The plant macrofossil assemblage of an outcrop at the coast near Kallithea (Rhodes, Greece) is documented. In this work, the taxonomy, plant geography and palaeoecology of a rich carpoflora with 27 species from the Pliocene/Pleistocene section is analysed. The sequence is well dated by means of non-palaeobotanical methods, and is exploited as reference point of the regional palaeofloristic development of the Rhodes Island. The floristic data of the fossil flora are used to detect the main floral changes in the Plio-Pleistocene: extinction of Tertiary elements (Cathaya abchasica, Pinus palaeostrobus, P strozzii, Sambucus pulchella) and remarkable migration of Mediterranean elements (Coris monspeliensis, Cyperus longus, Hyoscyamus reticulatus, Juniperus oxycedrus, Theligonum cynocrambe, Thymelaea passerina). Liquidambar orientalis (= L. europaea) is an indigenous plant relic in the ravine of Petaloudes, 25 km SE of Rhodes Town and near the Profitis Ilias-Mts. (EN)
