Στο απρόσιτο και εχθρικό σύγχρονο αστικό περιβάλλον, ο υπαίθριος σχολικός χώρος αποτελεί ένα από τα ελάχιστα εναπομείναντα πεδία όπου το παιδί μπορεί να δράσει ελεύθερα και ανεμπόδιστα σ’ ένα προστατευόμενο πλαίσιο, να νιώσει οικεία και να αλληλεπιδράσει δημιουργικά με τον υλικό χώρο και τους χρήστες του. Στην παρακάτω εργασία, γίνεται αναφορά στις παιδαγωγικές αντιλήψεις που ανέδειξαν την σημασία του σχολικού αύλειου χώρου για την σωματική και πνευματική ανάπτυξη του παιδιού, την κοινωνικο-πολιτισμική του αγωγή και τη διεύρυνση του γνωστικού του πεδίου. Κατόπιν, μελετήθηκε το δομικό πλαίσιο του σχολικού αύλειου χώρου στην Ελλάδα και τα ειδικότερα χαρακτηριστικά που συγκροτούν την τελική εικόνα του και αναζητήθηκε ο συσχετισμός της δομής και της προσχεδιασμένων λειτουργικών στόχων των υπό-ενοτήτων της σχολικής αυλής με τη χρήση που λαμβάνουν τελικώς από τα παιδιά και τους διδάσκοντες. Ερευνήθηκε επίσης η δυνατότητα -ή μη- των σχολικών αυλών να συμμετάσχουν ενεργά στην διαδικασία αγωγής του παιδιού είτε μέσω της επιτέλεσης μαθημάτων-οργανωμένων δραστηριοτήτων είτε μέσω της παροχής χωρικών ερεθισμάτων και δομών για την καλύτερη δυνατή εξυπηρέτηση της αυθόρμητης κίνησης και δράσης τους. Τέλος, εξετάστηκε η σχέση του υπαίθριου χώρου σε δομικό και λειτουργικό επίπεδο με το μικρο-περιβάλλον της γειτονιάς στο οποίο εντάσσεται.

In an unfriendly urban environment, the outdoor schoolyard is one of the very few remaining areas where a child can act freely and unrestrictedly in a protected environment as well as feel familiar and interact in a creative way with the material world and its other users. In this project, the pedagogical perceptions that have highlighted the importance of the outdoor school space for the physical and mental development of a child, as well as the socio-cultural education and the broadening of his field of knowledge, were analysed. Subsequently, the physical construction framework of the outdoor school space in Greece and the special characteristics that establish its final form were studied. In addition, the correlation between the structure and the designed operational purpose of the various sub-sections of the schoolyard and the final usage that they have from the students and teachers was explored. The influence -or otherwise- of the schoolyard in the process of children's education through the delivery of lessons and organised activities or the provision of spatial stimuli and structures for their development of unprompted movement and actions were also researched. Finally, on a broader scale, the relationship was examined between the outdoor space on a structural and operational level and the micro-environment of the neighbourhood in which it is integrated.
