The paper deals with the stress concentration created by shrinkage of the matrix in a two-phase material. Cross-sections of two-phase materials prepared from plasticised epoxy polymers cast around circular inclusions made of pure epoxy polymer were photoelastically investigated. It was found that for a single inclusion in an extended matrix the stress distribution in the matrix slightly depends on the matrix elastic modulus. For an array of closely spaced inclusions in a triangular arrangement the stress distribution around the inclusions varied with the elastic moduli of both phases. The influence of the clear distance between inclusions on the stress distribution was studied and the values of the stress concentration at the interface and the axes of the array were given. © 1970.
