In almost all currently employed pyrometallurgical treatments of nickel-bearing oxide ores, nickel is extracted as ferronickel containing some cobalt. The use of nickel in this alloy form is limited to steel-making which accounts for only about 40 pct of the total nickel consumption. Electrolytic nickel, originating mainly from sulfide ore, covers the remaining 60 pct of the nickel market. The development of a new process for the production of electrolytic nickel from ferronickel is described. High purity nickel (99.75 to 99.95 pct Ni) is obtained from ferronickel anodes with high nickel content. The cobalt contained in the alloy is recovered as hydroxide. After a description of the basic operations of anode preparation and electrolyte purification, the conditions of the electrolysis are examined in detail with special emphasis to the design of the cell. © 1975 The Metallurgical Society of AIME.
