ΜΕ ΤΙΣ ΑΝΑΛΥΣΕΙΣ ΤΩΝ ΑΣΒΕΣΤΟΚΟΝΙΑΜΑΤΩΝ ΑΠΟ ΚΝΩΣΣΟ, ΤΙΡΥΝΘΑ, ΠΥΛΟ, ΜΥΚΗΝΕΣ, ΑΚΡΩΤΗΡΙ ΣΑΝΤΟΡΙΝΗΣ ΚΑΤΑΛΗΞΑΜΕ ΟΤΙ ΕΝΑ ΤΕΤΟΙΟ ΚΡΙΤΗΡΙΟ ΕΙΝΑΙ, Ο ΙΣΟΤΟΠΙΚΟΣ ΛΟΓΟΣ 180/160 ΤΩΝ ΔΕΙΓΜΑΤΩΝ ΟΠΩΣ ΕΚΦΡΑΖΕΤΑΙ ΑΠΟ ΤΟΝ ΣΥΝΤΕΛΕΣΤΗ Δ180, ΝΑ ΠΑΙΡΝΕΙ ΤΗΝ ΤΙΜΗ -20% P.D.B.
THIS RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT A LARGE PROPORTION OF MYCENAEAN MORTARS CAN BE DATED USING THE RADIOCARBON METHOD. FURTHERMORE A CLOSE STUDY OF THE MORTAR SECTIONS HAS UNDERLINED THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERPRETING OXYGEN AND CARBON VARIATIONS. THE LATTER ARE AN IMPORTANT INDICATOR OF WHETHER A MORTAR PARTLY INCLUDES A CALCIUM CARBONATE WHICH HAD NOT BEEN COMPLETELY DECOMPOSED OR WHICH MIGHT HAVE BEEN ADDED WHEN THE MORTAR WAS LAID. THE Δ180 VALUES WERE HOMOGENEOUS THROUGHOUT THE MORTAR SAMPLES FROM ALL THE SIZES AND A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP EXISTS BETWEEN THE EARLY DATES FOUND FOR THE KNOSSOS AND TYRINS III MORTARS AND THE CORRESPONDING Δ18Ο VALUES. THEREFORE THE MAIN CONTRIBUTION BROUGHT BY THE MEASUREMENT OF THESE Δ18Ο VALUES IN THE FACT THAT IT ALLOWS A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE MORTARS USING ONLY 1 MG SAMPLES OF CALCITE. THIS MEANS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETECT IMMEDIATELY SAMPLES WHICH CANNOT BE DATED BY THE RADIOCARBON METHOD. THE USE OF 13C OF A MORTAR AS A MARKER OF THE LIME MORTAR COMPOSITION WOULD APPEAR RISKY BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF HOMOGENEITY IN THE CARBON ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION. NEVERTHELESS IN OUR RESEARCH WE USED SAMPLES WHICH WERE VERY SIMILAR TO EACH OTHER AS REGARDS SIZE, WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE Δ13C VALUES AND THE FACT THAT THE RADIOCARBON DATES FOUND WERE EARLIER THAN THOSE EXPECTED.
