Στην αρχή, η μελέτη αυτή εξετάζει το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο της αγροτικής γεωγραφίας τόσο από την πλευρά της κλασικής όσο και από την πλευρά της ριζοσπαστικής γεωγραφίας, εξετάζει ακόμα την αντίθεση της πόλης και της υπαίθρου και θεωρητικά και στην περίπτωση της Ελλάδας. Στη συνέχεια εξετάζεται η αγροτική πίστη σαν κεντρική ιδέα και οι χωρικές της εφαρμογές, τα συστήματα αγροτικής πίστης στην Ευρώπη και στα Βαλκάνια και η άσκηση, λεπτομερειακά, της αγροτικής πίστης στην Ελλάδα από την Αγροτική Τράπεζα. Ο ρόλος της Αγροτικής Τράπεζας στο μοντέλο ανάπτυξης και στο καθεστώς συσσώρευσης στην ύπαιθρο της Ελλάδας, οι χωρικές της πολιτικές και τα διάφοραπρογράμματα αγροτικής πολιτικής που εφάρμοσε η ΑΤΕ, σηματοδοτούν την γεωγραφία της επαρχίας της χώρας για πάνω από μισό αιώνα. Η σύνδεση της τράπεζας με τους συνεταιρισμούς, η στενή σχέση του συνεταιρικού κινήματος με την ΑΤΕ, η συνεργασία τους, αλλά και η κηδεμονία τωνσυνεταιρισμών από την ΑΤΕ αποτελούν κλειδί για την ανάγνωση του αγροτικού χώρου της πατρίδας μας τον 20° αιώνα. Η εμπλοκή της ΑΤΕ με τις χρήσεις γης, με την διαχείριση του αγροτικού εδάφους, οι πολιτικές που ακολούθησε και που δεν έδωσαν τα αναμενόμενα αποτελέσματα, μας φέρνουν αντιμέτωπους με το εγγειοδιαρθρωτικό πρόβλημα του αγροτικού χώρου της Ελλάδας, από την αγροτική μεταρρύθμιση και μετά. Τελευταία, εξετάζεται η χωρική εξάπλωση του δικτύου της ΑΤΕ, η παρουσία της τράπεζας και στα πιο απομακρυσμένα σημεία της χώρας και η πολιτική της στααστικά κέντρα. Η μετεξέλιξη της Αγροτικής Τράπεζας, η μετατροπή της σε τράπεζα πολλαπλών δραστηριοτήτων (UNIVERSAL BANK) και το μέλλον της σε σχέση με την καινούργια τραπεζική γεωγραφία της Ελλάδας ολοκληρώνει την διατριβή.
At the beginning, the present study researches the theoretical background of the agricultural geography not only from the classical perspective but from the perspective of radical geography as well; it also researches the contradiction between the city and the country both theoretically and at Greece's case. Furthermore, in this study the agricultural credit as a central idea and its territorial implementations, the systems of agricultural credit in Europe and Balkans and extensively the performance of the agricultural credit from the Agricultural Bank in Greece are examined. The role of the Agricultural Bank in the development model and in the accumulation regime in the countryside of Greece, the territorial policies and the alternative programs that ATE has developed, underpin the geography of the province of the country for over a half century. The conjunction of the bank to the co-operatives, the close relationship between the co-operative movement and ATE, their collaboration, but also the tutelage of co-operatives from ATE comprise the key for the reading of our country's agricultural place in the 20th century. The embroilment of ATE with the usage of the land, with the handling of agricultural ground, the policies that has followed and that has not given the expected results, make us confronting the land structural problem of the agricultural place of Greece, from the time of agricultural reform and afterwards. Lastly, the territorial proliferation of the ATE’s network, the presence of the bank even in the most remote places of the country and its policy at the urban areas are researched. The re-development of the Agricultural Bank, its transformation into a bank of multiple activities (UNIVERSAL BANK) and its future in relation to the novel banking geography of Greece consummates the dissertation.
