This doctoral thesis is divided into two parts: 1. In the first part A. In chapter A there is bibliographic reference to: firstly the oral-phacial system and the normal functional activity and secondly to the parts of the oral-phacial system. B. In chapter B there is reference the terminology, the causes of the oral-phasial disorders and the clinical indicator of malfunction. C. In chapter C there is bibliographic reference about treatment choices of patients with disfunction of the oral-phacial system. D. In chapter D there is a reference to the Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). For instance forms TENS, general characteristics TENS and techniques of TENS application). 2. In the second part, that concerns the clinical research, it is mentioned: the Doctoral Thesis was conducted in the department of Clinical Physiology of the oral-phacial system. In the Laboratory of Fixed Prostodontics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, so as to study the influence of TENS on the therapeutical confrontation of patients with craniomandibular disorders. Thirty seven patients out of seventy five were chosed to participated in the clinical research. These patients were examined for malfunctional problems of the oral-phacial system in the clinic of the Fixed Prostodontics. The same protocol of examination and therapeutical confrontation was followed for all the patients. The results of this research are the following: 1) The appearance symptoms of the malfunction of the oral-phacial system is more increased in women compared to men. 2) The biggest percentage of patients is between the ages of thirty to forty nine. 3) The frequency in the appearance of the symptoms is proportionate to the increase of people’s educational level. 4) There is a higher percentage of patients in urban areas. The application of TENS as certains that there is improvements in the symptoms in (a) clicking, (b) myophasial, (c) chronic headaches, (d) difficulty in opening the mouth and (e) difficulty in chewing. In conclusion, we can say that if TENS is applied to the Symptoms above, there will be improvement in the symptoms. It is a method that has many advantages because it is bloodless, non-infectuous without side effects and can be applied easily by the patients themselves.
