Firstly, the typological, morphological and structural analysis of the herodotean oaths aims to investigate if and what extend their historical and social dimension has been affected by their incorporation in the multilevel and multilateral text of Histories, given its complex intentionality, its roots and the requirements of the specific literary species it belongs to. In the second part of the dissertation oaths are categorized primarily on the criteria of the identity of the swearer and secondarily on the cause and result of their oath. The purpose of this division is to search if and by what means the herodotean oaths serve the basic thematic patterns of narration. This search is combined with the analysis of the specific function of each oath in its narrative context, in order to specify the versatile use of oaths as narrative tools. Finally, in the third part of the dissertation there is an effort to define the presence of oaths in the narrative body, based on the frequency of their appearance, their location and their connection to the thematic orientation of every book and of Histories as a whole. The results of the whole inquiry reveal the complex nature and multisided origin of the herodotean oaths and establish their various functions, which serve the narrative purposes as well as contribute to the formation of the narrattor’s persona and to the highlightening of the social, political, ideological and litarary settings of the his narration.
Η ειδολογική, μορφολογική και δομική ανάλυση των ηροδότειων όρκων έχει ως στόχο να αποδείξει κατά πόσον αλλοιώθηκε η ιστορική και κοινωνική τους διάσταση κατά την ένταξή τους σε ένα πολυσυλλεκτικό και πολυεπίπεδο κείμενο, όπως οι Ιστορίες, με την προθετικότητα, τις καταβολές, αλλά και τα ειδολογικά του συμφραζόμενα. Παράλληλα, με βασικό άξονα την ταυτότητα των ορκιζομένων και δευτερεύουσες παραμέτρους το σκοπό και την τύχη της δέσμευσής τους επιχειρείται κατηγοριοποίηση των όρκων, προκειμένου να διαπιστωθεί αν και με ποιο τρόπο αυτοί υπηρετούν βασικά θεματικά μοτίβα της ηροδότειας ιστορίας. Ταυτόχρονα εξετάζεται και η επιμέρους αφηγηματική τους λειτουργία, με σκοπό να προσδιορισθεί ο ρόλος τους ως εργαλείων της αφήγησης. Τέλος, αποτιμάται η παρουσία των όρκων στα εννέα βιβλία των Ιστοριών με βάση τη συχνότητα εμφάνισής τους, τη θέση τους σε καθένα από αυτά και τη σύνδεσή τους τόσο με το θεματικό πυρήνα κάθε βιβλίου χωριστά, όσο και με τον ευρύτερο θεματικό προσανατολισμό της αφήγησης. Τα αποτελέσματα της ευρύτερης έρευνας ανέδειξαν την σύνθετη φύση και προέλευση των ηροδότειων όρκων και την πολύπλευρη λειτουργία τους, η οποία υπηρετεί τους σκοπούς της αφήγησης, συμβάλλοντας, παράλληλα, στη διαμόρφωση της περσόνας του αφηγητή και στην ανάδειξη των κοινωνικών, πολιτικών, θρησκευτικών, φιλοσοφικών, αλλά και λογοτεχνικών συνιστωσών του έργου του.
