In this study we examined the relationship of sympathetic neurosis with atherosclerosis in the abdominal aorta. The material of study was received from the laboratory of Anatomy of Medical School of Athens University, from the Evangelismos hospital and from the Henry Dunant hospital. The specimens maintained in formaldehyde 10% and then were dyed with 5-flouorescin. Optical microscope was used in histological study, with an optical magnification of 1 / 100 and 1 / 1000. Twelve specimens of abdominal aorta from human cadavers, and fourteen specimens of patients of abdominal aneurysms were studied. The specimens were classified by sex and age. The histological study show that the healthy segments of the blood vessels has an extensive network of sympathetic nerve fibers. The vessels that have atherosclerotic lesions had a significant reduction or disappearance of sympathetic neurosis. It is obvious that the sympathetic nervous system is a shield in the vessels. The factors, which induce the atherosclerosis, affect first the endings of the sympathetic nervous system vessels. Undoubtedly, more studies are necessary to confirm our observations. More survey, might change the whole theory of atherogenesis.
