The present thesis is a detailed study of a number of both published and unpublished inscriptions which contribute in an important way to our understanding and interpretation of the History of Ancient Chios. The thesis includes the detailed publication of new inscriptions and the fresh study of epigraphic documents which have already been published with a view to shed light on various aspects of the public life of the Ancient Chians. Moreover, the relevant ancient literary sources are examined in the light of the new evidence and taking into account the bibliography pertaining to the History of Chios in the Classical and Hellenistic Periods. A total of thirty three inscriptions are published in the present thesis on the basis of the autopsy of the monuments, all of which -except for one- are Chian inscriptions (these thirty three inscriptions include the first edition of five new inscriptions and the new edition of twenty eight published ones) . The study of the inscriptions which pertain to the institution of the proxenia and of a new honorary decree of the Kalydonians have provided new evidence on the international relations of the Chians, especially during the early Hellenistic Period. Moreover, the new edition of twenty seven inscriptions pertaining to the internal affairs of the Chians has led to new observations and conclusions regarding the subjects of the defense, the economy, the distribution of the Chian citizens among gene, phatries and other formations, as well as the prosopography of the Chians. In the last chapter of the thesis a historical synthesis is attempted -comprising the old and new evidence together with the relevant bibliography- covering the time period from the presence of Alexander the Great (334 or 332 B.C.) up to the Naval Battle of Chios (201 B.C.) in combination with the relevant literary and epigraphic testimonies both old and new.
Aντικείμενο της διατριβής ειναι η αναλυτική δημοσίευση νέων και η επαναδημοσίευση ήδη γνωστών επιγραφών, που φωτίζουν εκφάνσεις του δημοσίου βίου των Χίων. Επίσης, η επανεξέταση, βάσει των νέων στοιχείων, των αρχαίων πηγών και της σύγχρονης βιβλιογραφίας, της ιστορίας της Xίου κατά τους κλασικούς και ελληνιστικούς χρόνους. Δημοσιεύονται κατόπιν αυτοψίας και εξετάζονται αναλυτικά τριάντα τρείς επιγραφές, όλες, πλην μιάς, Χιακές (πέντε νέες και είκοσι οκτώ δημοσιευμένες). Η μελέτη των επιγραφών που αφορούν στον θεσμό της προξενίας, και νέου τιμητικού ψηφίσματος των Καλυδωνίων προσέθεσε νέα στοιχεία για τις εξωτερικές σχέσεις των Χίων, ιδιαίτερα κατά τους πρώιμους ελληνιστικούς χρόνους. Επίσης η επανέκδοση είκοσι επτά επιγραφών που αφορούν σε εσωτερικά πράγματα των Χίων οδήγησε σε νέες παρατηρήσεις και συμπεράσματα σχετικά με την άμυνα, την οικονομία, την κατανομή των πολιτών σε γένη, φατρίες ή άλλους σχηματισμούς, αλλά και την προσωπογραφία των Xίων. Στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο της διατριβής επιχειρείται η ένταξη των νέων στοιχείων στην ιστορία της Χίου από την εμφάνιση εκεί του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου (334 ή 332 π.Χ.) έως την ναυμαχία της Χίου (201 π.Χ.), σε συνδυασμό με τις σχετικές φιλολογικές και επιγραφικές, παλαιές και νέες, μαρτυρίες.
