In the present study the development of a generalized mathematical kinetic model is presented for the description of a large group of free radical polymerization reactions. Particularly, the kinetics of polymerization reactions are described with one, two and three monomers being present simultaneously, while it is shown the capability for an easy extension of the model to polymerization systems with more than three monomers. Furthermore, the developed model is applied to bulk, solution and suspension polymerizations and under different operating conditions. Particular emphasis is given in the description of the diffusion phenomena, with theoretical and mathematical terms, and how these phenomena affect the physicochemical properties of the system and, through them, the molecular properties of the polymer produced. Moreover, the predictions of the kinetic model are presented concerning the distributions of some important molecular properties like the molecular weights, copolymer composition and sequence length of the monomers in the polymer chain. Different techniques are studied for the calculation of the molecular weight distribution of linear and branched macromolecules, and the predictions of the most important are compared with each other. Their capabilities, reliability and their limitations are studied in detail while a new easy to use technique is proposed, based on the combination of two known distributions, that describes the molecular weight distribution of the polymers with greater accuracy. Finally, it should be noticed that the primary objective of this study was the development of a generalized tool that could be applied to a great variety of polymerization systems. This objective presupposes a strict theoretical approach of the modeling problem and, if possible, the avoidance of use of any empirical relationships valid only for a specific system.
