Flow injection is a kinetic-based technique which does not require the reaction being monitored to undergo completion prior to analysis. This is due to the reproducible timing and controlled dispersion of flow injection.Palladium is widely used in many important chemical processes as efficient hydrogenation catalyst, in automobile exhaust-gas converter catalysts, in electronics industry, in dental alloys and others. This work is a study of the palladium determination using flow injection techniques. All developed methods were based on the coloured complex of palladium(II) by 2,2΄-dipyridyl-2-pyridylhydrazone (DPPH).The results of this study can be summarized as follows:1) Two methods based on the use of normal and stopped-flow injection mode were developed, using buffer solution (pH = 5.05) and 0.5 mol L-1 HCl as a carrier stream, for normal and stopped-flow mode respectively. The absorbance of colored Pd(II)-DPPH complex produced was monitored at 540 nm in a flow throw cell. The various chemical and physical parameters were optimized and a study of interfering ions was also carried out.In the normal mode (normal FIA) the calibration graph has two linear parts. The first part is in the range of 0 - 25 mg L-1 (sr = 0.43 %, r = 0.9999) with a detection limit of cL = 0.075 mg L-1. The second part is in the range of 25 - 60 mg L-1 (sr = 3.4 %, r = 0,9983). In both cases the sampling rate is 70 injections per hour.In the stopped-flow mode (SF-FIA) the calibration graph has also two linear parts. The first part is in the range of 0 - 25 mg L-1 (sr = 0.44 %, r = 0.9999) with a detection limit of cL = 0.089 mg L-1. The second part is in the range of 25 - 60 mg L-1 (sr = 1.6 %, r = 0,9996). In both cases the sampling rate is 35 injections per hour. The stopped-flow method was found to be very selective owing to the fact that the strongly acidic medium used prevented the formation of complexes of the reagent with other ions. The two methods has been successfully applied to the determination of palladium in three different hydrogenation catalysts, three automobile exhaust-gas converter catalysts and in a dental alloy. The relative standard deviation was, sr < 1.7 %, and the recovery of palladium was between R = 96.5 - 98.8 %. 2) Two methods based on the use of liquid-liquid extraction technique were developed for the determination of palladium(II), using normal (EX-FIA) and stopped-flow injection (SF-EX-FIA) mode. The absorbance of the extracted in CHCl3 coloured complex Pd(II)-DPPH was monitored at 560 nm. The various chemical and physical parameters were optimized and a study of interfering ions was also carried out.In the normal (EX-FIA) mode, the calibration graph was linear up to 12 mg L-1 (sr = 0.24 %, r = 0.9999) with a detection limit of cL = 0.015 mg L-1. The sampling rate was 25 injections per hour.An injection valve was used as a commutator before the segmentor in order to combine the stopped-flow technique with liquid-liquid extraction FI system. The calibration graph was linear up to 12 mg L-1 (sr = 0.27 %, r = 0.9999) with a detection limit of cL = 0.007 mg L-1. The sampling rate was 20 injections per hour. The two method has been successfully applied to the determination of palladium(II) in three automobile exhaust gas converter catalysts and in three different hydrogenation catalysts with satisfactory results (sr < 2.6 % and R = 96.3 - 98.8).
