The thesis examines the way by which the art school of Bauhaus revolutionized the stage as part of the avant-garde movement at the beginning of the 20th century. Bauhaus challenged the traditional idea of theatre, both as stage action and theatre architecture. My primary aim in this thesis is to offer a detailed overview of this subversive proposal for the theatre, by studying the experimental stage productions of the Bauhaus theatre workshop, the writings and manifestos on theatre published by its members, as well as their attempts in redesigning the theatrical and scenic space. The thesis also endeavors to discuss the influence of Bauhaus exerted not only on contemporary theatre but also on art in general. The primary research took place in the cities that housed Bauhaus: Weimar-Dessau-Berlin. The material held at Bauhaus Archiv-Berlin and the writings of Oskar Schlemmer who was in charge of the theatre workshop between the years 1923-1929, were my main source of information and the basis for my discussion of the Bauhaus theatre. Concerning the redesigning of theatrical space, Bauhaus altered the relation between actors and spectators by introducing the inspiring idea of space variability (Total Theatre, Spherical Theatre, Theatre U, etc.). The theatrical space inside the Bauhaus-Dessau building, designed by Walter Gropius, the director of the Bauhaus, at 1925, became my case study; a new complete architectural plan is produced, as there were no available plans and information so far on the equipment of this scene. By breaking with all known theatre rules, Bauhaus is considered as a precursor of Kinetic Art, Performance Art, Dance theatre and The Theater of Images. The attack on drama and the absence of text and speech permit us to name the theatre of the Bauhaus as “metadramatic” many years before the use of this term in modern theatre.
Η διατριβή εξετάζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η σχολή του Bauhaus συνέβαλε στην αναθεώρηση του θεάτρου που συντελέστηκε στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα. Οι προτάσεις του Bauhaus επανεξετάζουν το θέατρο συνολικά, τόσο ως σκηνική πράξη όσο και ως θεατρικό οικοδόμημα. Κύριος στόχος της διατριβής είναι να φωτίσει σφαιρικά αυτή την ανατρεπτική θεώρηση του θεάτρου, εξετάζοντας τις πειραματικές παραστάσεις του θεατρικού εργαστηρίου του Bauhaus, τα θεωρητικά κείμενα για την ανανέωση του θεάτρου αλλά και τις προτάσεις για τον ανασχεδιασμό του θεατρικού και σκηνικού χώρου. Ακόμη, επιχειρείται μια αποτίμηση της επίδρασης αυτής της θεώρησης όχι μόνο στο σύγχρονο θέατρο αλλά στο σύνολο των παραστατικών τεχνών. Η επιτόπια έρευνα ακολούθησε τη διαδρομή του Bauhaus, σε Βαϊμάρη-Ντεσάου-Βερολίνο. Σημαντικότερες πρωτογενείς πηγές της έρευνας αποτέλεσαν το Αρχείο του Bauhaus στο Βερολίνο, καθώς και τα κείμενα του Oskar Schlemmer (υπεύθυνου του θεατρικού εργαστηρίου στο διάστημα 1923-1929). Οι προτάσεις για τον ανασχεδιασμό του θεατρικού χώρου, εισάγοντας νέες δομές στη σχέση ηθοποιού-θεατή καθώς και την ιδέα της μεταβλητότητας του χώρου, υπήρξαν πηγή έμπνευσης για το σύγχρονο θεατρικό σχεδιασμό. Ένα πρώτο υλοποιημένο παράδειγμα αποτελεί η σκηνή του θεατρικού εργαστηρίου στο, σχεδιασμένο από τον διευθυντή Walter Gropious, το 1925, κτίριο της σχολής στο Ντεσάου. Καθώς δεν υπάρχουν επαρκή σχέδια του θεατρικού χώρου και στοιχεία για τον εξοπλισμό της σκηνής του, έγινε πλήρης αποτύπωση του συγκεκριμένου χώρου. Οι σκηνικοί πειραματισμοί του Bauhaus καταργώντας τους περισσότερους από τους κανόνες του μέχρι τότε γνωστού θεάτρου, μπορούν να θεωρηθούν προπομποί της Κινητικής Τέχνης, της Perfomance Art, του Χοροθεάτρου και φυσικά, του Θεάτρου των Εικόνων. Η κατάργηση της δραματουργίας μας επιτρέπει να μιλούμε για ένα πραγματικό «μεταδραματικό θέατρο» πολλά χρόνια πριν την καθιέρωση του όρου.
