This study examines Classical and Hellenistic statues and inscriptions erected in the ancient theatres of continental and insular Greece. The dissertation is divided into two Parts of text (Part I and II) and one Part of illustrations (Part III, 463 photos). In Part I, the geographical and chronological limits of the research are determined, the term θέατρον/theatron is analyzed via the literary and epigraphical sources, which are commented. Furthermore, the multiple functions of theatres are described and the inscriptions are classified in categories. The above mentioned introductory chapters aim to underline the relationship between the theatrical space and the free-standing statues, which were erected in or around it. In fact, the building itself did not bear sculptural decoration, with the only exception of the scene building of the Delos theatre, decorated with a frieze and antefixes. The most extensive chapter of Part I of this PhD thesis is constituted by the Catalogue of those theatres that, due to their finds, encouraged the progress of our research. Part II comprises the analysis of the data and is organised in 7 chapters. Large space is devoted to the discussion about statues which were displayed within the theatres. Firtsly, those of Gods and heroes are examined, then those of mortals, and finally statues from the circle of Dionysos and other allegorical figures. The most interesting point is that statues are attributed for the first time to the theatrical space, while the selected iconographical types are compared to parallels found in theatrical buildings outside Greece. Beside statues, thrones, bases, reliefs, phalluses, masks, inscriptions e.t.c. are taken into account, many of them unpublished. Discoveries from ancient theatres prove that the practice of erecting sculptures in the Greek theatres did not follow the same pattern. Only few sculptures were displayed, at the end of the 4th century, along the parodoi, while some decades later, more sculptures were located around the orchestra, near the seats of honour, at the ends of the retaining walls of the auditorium, and in the area between the temple of Dionysos and the theatre. This study, therefore, provides a general reconstitution of the sculptures in ancient theatres, presenting not only reliefs and groups of statues, as predecessors of the elaborated Roman scaenae frontes, but also independent sculptures that were included in the theatrical space in different time periods and with different reasons. Particular stress is given to the analysis of the religious, votive and honorific character of the monuments. The theatre and its festivals, as well as the votives and honorary statues erected in the theatrical space, aimed at educating the citizens and strengthening their religious sentiment/feeling and their political conscience.
