Astronomy and astrology: Io’s wandering in Rome and the ovidian moon

From the ancient texts and the archaeological evidence we possess, one can easily assess the strong influence of astronomy and astrology on the political, social, religious and cultural life in Rome during the late pre-Christian and early Christian centuries. Parallel to this influence, the ever mysterious and fascinating Egyptian civilization indelibly left its mark on the Greek and Roman world. It is in such a cultural environment that Ovid was born. In his world the constellations are represented in animal form, the stars are considered the arbiters of human fortune, and the Egyptian deities were worshipped by the lower as well as the upper classes of the Roman society. Ovid had at his disposal an abundance of ancient myths, in which in many cases it was impossible to distinguish the Greek from the Egyptian elements. A number of these myths – among them that of Io – was assimilated into Ovid’s narrative in his Metamorphoses. The poet employed a number of techniques in the narrative development. Parts of it, for instance, are deliberately suppressed and concealed and the reader is called upon to fill in the missing story by using other parts of the narrative thread. Each such suppression is a kind of metamorphosis: what one expects to find is missing and is found further down under a different form. Another technique is the fusion into the terrestrial realm of celestial elements in the indivisible carmen perpetuun. The above two techniques both serve the poet’s universal view that everything should be seen in the perspective of continuous time, without any kind of distinctions or limits. The above thoughts have led me to the study of the episode of Io (Met. 1.568-750), the mythical heroine who was identified with the Egyptian lunar deity of Isis and whose course from Argos to the land of the Nile united Greece and Egypt into a unified geographical and cultural space. In the undertaking of this study the observation was made that from the cosmogony of the Metamorphoses Ovid excluded any mention as to the creation of the moon, even though the poet had expressly stated that it did not exist during the period of Chaos (Met. 1.11: nec nova crescendo reparabat cornua Phoebe.). We have to do here with an instance of explicit concealment, of which Ovid was fond. In my view, the episode of Io is the part of the narrative in which the reader of the Metamorphoses will be called upon to recognize the creation of the moon (Met. 1.610-11: inque nitentem / …. iuvencam), its waxing to a full moon (Met. 1.731: quos potuit … vultus) and then itswaning (Met. 1.738-9: vultus … / … ante fuit; 740: cornua … orbis; 743: de bove … in illa). The waxing and waning of the moon will also be a subject for Pythagoras in his well-known discourse at the beginning of Book 15 of the Metamorphoses (196-8). It is widely accepted that in it, Pythagoras reintroduces themes from the earlier Books of the work and especially from Book 1. In this dissertation the reader will find signs which corroborate the view that the episode of Io, the wandering heifer, in a second reading stands for the moon and its creation, which is missing from the narrative, and that Argos – the many-eyed guardian – stands for the starry sky. After the conclusion of the eventful episode, the lonely journey of the moon in the Metamorphoses and in perpetuity can begin…
Κατά τη γνώμη μου, το επεισόδιο της Ιούς είναι εκείνο στο οποίο ο αναγνώστης των Μεταμορφώσεων θα δει τη σελήνη να δημιουργείται (Met. 1.610–1: inque nitentem / Inachidos vultus mutaverat ille iuvencam), να αυξάνεται και να γίνεται πανσέληνος (Met. 1.731: quos potuit solos, tollens ad sidera vultus) κι ύστερα να φθίνει (Met. 1.738–9: vultus capit illa priores / fitque quod ante fuit· 740: cornua decrescunt, fit luminis artior orbis· 743: de bove nil superest formae nisi candor in illa).
