The purpose of the present thesis is to explore the psychosocial meaning of home. Home is a complex construct that carries a variety of meanings related to its personal as well as to its social aspects. The main objective of the present study is to explore the interrelation between house attachment, as reflecting the subjective experience of one’s own private dwelling place and social representations, as reflecting the collective housing experience within a particular cultural context, that is of a modern urban city setting. Τhe present study is situated within the phenomenological paradigm of the subjective experience of home and it is primarily based on the transactional psychological theories of Place Attachment (Giuliani, 2003). The concept of attachment as introduced by J. Bowlby’s Attachment Theory, is further developed and explored in relation to the bond formation with meaningful place(s). The study further employs Social Representations (Farr & Moscovici, 1984), both as a theoretical and a methodological tool of social psychology, in order to examine the interaction between the subjective and the collective experience of home. The sample of the present study consists of 303 individuals who live in Attica. (Greece) Administration of a research instrument (questionnaire), comprised of both quantitative and qualitative questions regarding functional and emotional dimensions of house attachment and mobility patterns. Social Representations of home were examined by the method of free associations during which subjects were asked to write down the three first words or phrases which came to their mind upon hearing the word “home”. Furthermore, several open-ended questions regarding the “ideal house” , the “excluded house” and the “imagined house were also administered to the subjects. The results obtained show that the representations of home are highly linked to its psychological /emotional features. It is further proposed that the present study will contribute to the esearch for a better understanding of the interrelation between the psychological and social aspects of home as well as to the study of the construct of place attachment and the formation of personal and social bonds to meaningful places.

Η διατριβή επικεντρώνεται σε μια πολυεπίπεδη ψυχοκοινωνική διερεύνηση της έννοιας του σπιτιού που αφορά τόσο στις κοινωνικές αναπαραστάσεις του όσο και στις συναισθηματικές διαστάσεις του δεσμού με τον οικείο χώρο του κατοικείν καθώς και στις πολλαπλές καθημερινές λειτουργίες της κατοίκησης. Όλες οι μεταβλητές διερευνήθηκαν μέσω ερωτηματολογίου που μοιράστηκε σε δείγμα 303 ατόμων. Οι κοινωνικές αναπαραστάσεις του σπιτιού συλλέχθηκαν με τη μέθοδο των ελεύθερων συνειρμών και το υλικό αναλύθηκε με την μέθοδο δομικής προσέγγισης των αναπαραστάσεων του P.Vergès (1994). Οι υπόλοιπες μεταβλητές (λειτουργικός και συναισθηματικός χωρικός δεσμός) διερευνήθηκαν μέσω ερωτηματολογίου με κλειστές και ανοιχτές ερωτήσεις. Πραγματοποιήθηκε ακόμα συμπληρωματικά ανάλυση περιεχομένου σε έντυπες διαφημίσεις στεγαστικών τραπεζικών δανείων καθώς και ημι-δομημένες συνεντεύξεις. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν σε σχέση με τις κοινωνικές αναπαραστάσεις του σπιτιού, ότι στο σύνολο του δείγματος, ο κεντρικός πυρήνας παραπέμπει σε έννοιες με ψυχολογικές σημασιοδοτήσεις, ενώ διαπιστώθηκαν στατιστικά σημαντικές διαφορές ανάλογα με το φύλο την κοινωνική τάξη και το καθεστώς κατοίκησης. Η αναπαράσταση του σπιτιού αναδεικνύει ως κυρίαρχα τα ψυχολογικά εκείνα στοιχεία που το καθιστούν κεντρικό αντικείμενο στη διερεύνηση του οικείου χώρου ως πρωταρχικού (ψυχολογικού, κοινωνικού και περιβαλλοντικού) τόπου οικειότητας και συναισθηματικής χωρικής επένδυσης. Τέλος, σε ότι αφορά στα αποτελέσματα σχετικά με τον χωρικό δεσμό, διαφάνηκε ότι ο λειτουργικός χωρικός δεσμός διαφοροποιείται εννοιολογικά και ποιοτικά από τον συναισθηματικό χωρικό δεσμό, αν και οι δύο αυτές μεταβλητές συσχετίζονται.
