My PhD thesis focuses on the anthropological study and theorisation of specific political aspects of New Age spirituality, through the ethnographic paradigm of one of the biggest and most popular spiritual centres of Greece: “Harmonious Life”, established by Robert Elias Najemy in 1984. More specifically, my research examines the way in which the belief systems, body techniques and structures of sentiments articulated and cultivated by “Harmonious Life” imply specific political attitudes and copping strategies concerning the Greek economic crisis. In this sense, my study aims at a deeper understanding of New Age spirituality in Greece, traditionally thought as an Eastern Orthodox country, not only at the level of the philosophical discourse on which it is based, but mainly at the level of its socio-political entailments. By systematically analysing the public relevance and politics of New Age spirituality in view of the Greek economic crisis, my dissertation challenges any idealistic or strictly self-centred understanding of spirituality, while at the same time contributes to a possible dialogue between anthropology of religion and political anthropology.
Ερευνητικό αντικείμενο της διατριβής αποτελεί η ανθρωπολογική καταγραφή, μελέτη και θεωρητικοποίηση συγκεκριμένων όψεων της εναλλακτικής θρησκευτικότητας στην Ελλάδα, μέσα από το εθνογραφικό παράδειγμα του πνευματικού Κέντρου Αρμονική Ζωή. Ειδικότερα, η διατριβή αποπειράται να διερευνήσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι πνευματικές τεχνικές, αλλά και οι κοσμοθεωρητικές αντιλήψεις που προάγονται από την Αρμονική Ζωή, συναρθρώνονται με ευρύτερες πολιτικές στάσεις και στρατηγικές αντιμετώπισης των επιπτώσεων της οικονομικής κρίσης. Υπ’ αυτήν την έννοια, η διατριβή φιλοδοξεί να συμβάλλει σε μία βαθύτερη κατανόηση μιας ιδιαίτερης εκδοχής της εναλλακτικής θρησκευτικότητας, όχι μονάχα στο επίπεδο των θεωρητικών της προδιαγραφών –ήγουν, στα συστήματα πεποιθήσεων πάνω στα οποία αυτή θεμελιώνεται– αλλά κυρίως στο επίπεδο των κοινωνικοπολιτικών της χρήσεων και συνεπαγωγών.
