At the end of the Peloponnesian War Athens had lost all of its overseas terrritories, and its naval power Sparta, which were the prime aspects of its empire, while Sparta had supplanted Athens' influence over its former satellite-states and dominated the entire Greek world in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Athenians had to develop new alliances, strategies, and tactics in order to recover their lost prestige and by the end of the fourth century came closer to realising a complete hegemony than any other city-state, only to lose to the Macedonian superstate of Philip. The author examines the strategies and policies that constitute the Athenian grand strategy, as well as the strategies of the opponents of Athens, and how those reacted to one another. The author used all of the surviving ancient literary sources, the recovered epigraphic material, and taken into account even the latest historical and archaeological research in regard to the subject matter.
Με τη λήξη του Πελοποννησιακού Πολέμου η Αθήνα είχε χάσει όλες τις κληρουχίες της στις ελληνικές πόλεις-κράτη και την ναυτική της ισχύ, τα δυο στοιχεία που αποτελούσαν τον πυλώνα της ηγεμονίας της. Παράλληλα η Σπάρτη είχε αποκτήσει τον έλεγχο όλων των πρώην Αθηναϊκών κρατών-δορυφόρων και κυριαρχούσε σε ολόκληρο τον Ελληνικό κόσμο της ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Οι Αθηναίοι προκειμένου να επανακτήσουν την χαμένη τους πυγμή υποχρεώθηκαν να δημιουργήσουν καινούργιες συμμαχίες και να αναπτύξουν νέες στρατηγικές και τακτικές. Προς το τέλος του τετάρτου αιώνα π.Χ. η Αθήνα είχε φτάσει πιο κοντά από κάθε άλλη πόλη-κράτος στο αν εξασφαλίσει μια πλήρη ηγεμονία, αλλά ηττήθηκε από το Μακεδονικό βασίλειο του Φιλίππου. Ο συγγραφέας εξετάζει τις στρατηγικές και τις πολιτικές που αποτελούν τα μέρη της Αθηναϊκής υψηλής στρατηγικής, καθώς και τις στρατηγικές προσεγγίσεις των αντιπάλων της Αθήνας και καταλήγει σε συμπεράσματα ως προς την αλληλεπίδραση μεταξύ τους. Ο συγγραφέας χρησιμοποίησε όλο το σχετικό συγγραφικό υλικό που έχει διασωθεί από την αρχαιότητα, το επιγραφικό υλικό που έχει πρόσφατα ανακαλυφθεί και εξέτασε παράλληλα όλη την ιστορική και αρχαιολογική έρευνα που ασχολείται με αντικείμενο του θέματος του.
