The present doctoral thesis aims to highlight the sacred element in the life and works of the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890), in the artist's dialectical relationship with the religious element and God. It examines the artist's relationship to Protestantism and Calvinism, his family background, how he experienced his religious sentiment and how he identified himself as an artist, as well as what symbols he used in his art to render the divine. Techniques and terms used by Van Gogh in his works are also examined and are in dialogue with topics of Orthodox Theology. In addition, the present research highlights social extensions of the works of the Dutch painter as well as his written legacy.
Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή αποσκοπεί να αναδείξει το ιερό στοιχείο στη ζωή και τα έργα του Ολλανδού μεταϊμπρεσιονιστή ζωγράφου Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890), στη διαλεκτική σχέση του καλλιτέχνη με το θρησκευτικό στοιχείο και τον Θεό. Εξετάζεται η σχέση του καλλιτέχνη με τον Προτεσταντισμό και τον Καλβινισμό, το οικογενειακό του υπόβαθρο, πώς ο ίδιος βίωσε το θρησκευτικό του συναίσθημα και πώς προσδιορίζεται ως καλλιτέχνης, καθώς και ποια σύμβολα χρησιμοποίησε στην τέχνη του για να αποδώσει το θείο. Ακόμη εξετάζονται τεχνικές και όροι που χρησιμοποιεί ο Van Gogh στα έργα του και διαλέγονται με θέματα της Ορθόδοξης Θεολογίας. Επιπλέον στην παρούσα έρευνα αναδεικνύονται κοινωνικές προεκτάσεις των έργων του Ολλανδού ζωγράφου αλλά και της γραπτής του παρακαταθήκης.
