The dissertation explores the extent to which thought experiments can offer explanations. It is argued that this is done if we conceptualize them as sets of mingled representations i.e. representations that carry information that is at once hypothetical and empirical and it is shown that this representational schema can answer "why questions".
Η διατριβή εξετάζει το βαθμό στον οποίο τα νοητικά πειράματα μπορούν να δώσουν εξηγήσεις. Αυτό επιτυγχάνεται αν τα προσεγγίσουμε ως ένα σύνολο μικτών αναπαραστάσεων, ήτοι, αναπαραστάσεων εμπειρικών και υποθετικών καταστάσεων. Η πληροφορία που φέρουν οι μικτές αναπαραστάσεις μπορεί να απαντήσει σε ερωτήσεις τύπου "γιατί;".
