The work at hand, discusses from an anthropological viewpoint a grassroots mobilisation in the neighbourhood of Arnavutköy in Istanbul – Turkey. This mobilisation was the result of the announcement of the construction of a bridge over the Bosphorus straight that would connect the Asian with the European shores of the city. As a response, the residents of the European neighbourhood, in which the bridge would be placed organised an initiative called Arnavutköy District Initiative (Arnavutköy Semt Girişimi – ASG), opposing the construction of the bridge. According to the participantsof ASG, the reasons that motivated their resistance concerned the destructive effects that the construction of the bridge would have on the areas’ natural and cultural assets as well as on the lifestyle of its residents. After conducting fieldwork on the area, the present work’s analysis of the protest moves from contextualising it in contemporary Turkey and Istanbul to a closer ethnographic examination of the protest itself. Therefore, in the pages that follow, I have attempted to examine ASG as a product of the particular character of Turkish public life and to illustrate the particular character of ASG as a product of the identities evolving, the activities taking place and the community that these have created amidst the struggle. This consideration lead to a distinction between the formal face of theinitiative which is the environmental face and its informal face: the transenvironmental.
Η διδακτορική διατριβή αποτελεί μια εθνογραφική μελέτη μιας κινητοποίησης βάσης (grassroots mobilisation) στην περιοχή Αρναβούτκιοϊ της Ιστανμπούλ. Η κινητοποίηση αυτή οργανώθηκε ως απάντηση των κατοίκων της περιοχής στην απόφαση της Τουρκικής κυβέρνησης γιατην κατασκευή μιας γέφυρας που ενώνει το ασιατικό με το ευρωπαϊκό κομμάτι της πόλης. Αντιτιθέμενοι στην κατασκευή της γέφυρας οι κάτοικοι του Αρναβούτκιοϊ συγκρότησαν μία ομάδα την οποία ονόμασαν Πρωτοβουλία Περιοχής Αρναβούτκιοϊ (στα τουρκικά Arnavutköy Semt Girişimi – ASG). Σύμφωνα με ακτιβιστές της Πρωτοβουλίας οι λόγοι που οδήγησαν στην δημιουργία της ομάδας αυτής αφορούν στα καταστρεπτικά αποτελέσματα που η κατασκευή έχει στο φυσικό και κοινωνικό περιβάλλον καθώς επίσης και στην πολιτισμική κληρονομιά της περιοχής. Η διατριβή που βασίζεται σε επιτόπια έρευνα 18 μηνών κινείται γύρω από δύο βασικούς άξονες. Αρχικά πλαισιώνει την διαμαρτυρία κάνοντας μια αναδρομή στην πολιτική ιστορία της Τουρκίας με στόχο την καλύτερη κατανόηση του αναγνώστη των δομών και διαδικασιών που γεννούν τέτοιου είδους ομάδες στη σύγχρονη Τουρκία. Στη συνέχεια προχωράει σε μια ανάλυση η οποία εστιάζει στο χαρακτήρα και στις πρακτικές της ομάδας καθώς επίσης και στις ταυτότητες που αναδύονται μέσα από την συμμετοχή σε αυτή. Αποτέλεσμα αυτής της οπτικής είναι η ανάλυση της Πρωτοβουλίας ASG ως αποτέλεσμα του χαρακτήρα της τουρκικής δημόσιας ζωής αλλά και ως αποτέλεσμα των υποκειμενικοτήτων των ακτιβιστών. Η ανάλυση αυτή οδηγεί στην διάκριση του επίσημου περιβαλλοντικού και του ανεπίσημου διαπεριβαλλοντικού χαρακτήρα της Πρωτοβουλίας.
